Written by: Michael Chang Capilano River Regional Park (aka Capilano Canyon) is one of the outdoor gems of the Metro Vancouver area.It’s accessible all year, it’s trails are hiked by all ages, and it’s the closest to the city where you can enjoy a west coast style rainforest within a scenic, rugged canyon setting. The park is located just downstream of the Cleveland Dam in North Vancouver. You can walk down from either side of the dam – the route is a loop so you can walk down one way and back up the other. The Capilano Pacific Trail follows the Capilano River, the border of North and West Vancouver, from the sea up to Cleveland Dam where much of Vancouver's drinking water comes from. View an impressive spillway nearing 300 feet, holding back the 670-acre man-made Capilano Lake, which provides the wonderful, pure drinking water for much of the Greater Vancouver region. The hiking trail takes you over the Cleveland Dam wall to the north, with spectacular views of the Capilano Canyon and boulder strewn Capilano River upstream from the salmon hatchery. This is a highly featured Loop taking in the Spirit Trail, Capilano Regional Park, and the Mosquito Creek Trail.
